Why Titanium?

Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It was discovered in Cornwall, Great Britain, by William Gregor in 1791 and named by Martin Heinrich Klaproth for the Titans of Greek mythology. The element occurs within a number of mineral deposits, principally rutile and ilmenite, which are widely distributed in the Earth’s crust and lithosphere, and it is found in almost all living things, rocks, water bodies and soils.

Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminum, vanadium, molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong lightweight alloys for aerospace (jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft), military, industrial process (chemicals and petro-chemicals, desalination plants, pulp, and paper), automotive, agri-food, medical prostheses, orthopedic implants, dental and endodontic instruments and files, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones – and of course premium quality fly reels!

Titanium is an amazing material – it is about 1.5 times heavier than Aluminum and about two times lighter than Stainless Steel. However, it is more than two times stronger than any Aluminum alloy and has about the same strength as high-grade steel. So, ideally, we can often get the same weight reel (or even lighter if compared to one made of aluminum) with a much-improved structural strength throughout the entire construction.

And if we add that Titanium is completely resistant to virtually any kind of corrosion or degradation, its inherent qualities make it a perfect material for the manufacturing of fishing reels!

Also, the colour of polished Ti is quite unique and absolutely stunning! Therefore, needless to say it does not need any decorative or protective coatings!

The only drawback of Ti is the fact that the material is relatively rare and hard to machine; thus the cost of making a Ti reel is relatively high. On the other hand there are a lot of really nice Aluminum reels priced several times more! So everything is relative :)
